Substance use disorder is complex and often occurs alongside other conditions like chronic pain, anxiety, and depression. Its successful resolution may require medical detox and supplementary medication. For these reasons, non-addictive prescriptions may be recommended for those participating in our recovery program.
Vista Taos is home to a world-class team led by Medical Director Curtis R. Markham, M.D., DABAM. Dr. Markham is a board-certified addictionologist with more than 17 years of experience in the field of addiction medicine. Prior to that, he practiced anesthesiology and chronic and interventional pain management for another 17 years. At Vista Taos, Dr. Markham provides two key services: addiction medicine consultations and ongoing medication management.
Dr. Markham leverages his extensive expertise to identify and remedy conditions requiring medication. When the symptoms of detoxification or co-occurring disorders create obstacles in the recovery process, he will assess the situation and recommend a carefully chosen series of medications. These addiction medicine consultations are available to new clients and those who have been at Vista Taos for an extended period. Once medications have been prescribed, Dr. Markham and the nursing staff offer follow-up medication management services.
We don’t believe in one-and-done medicating. Instead, our holistic team keeps an eye on client progress over time. Through ongoing medication management appointments, Dr. Markham and our nurses work closely with clients to perfect dosages, measure outcomes, and taper prescriptions when appropriate.
